WILSON DIXON'S AMERICAN DREAM
FRINGE FESTIVAL 2009
THE STAND – STAND III
4.45pm (Ends 5.45pm)
7th – 30th AUGUST 2009 (preview 6th at 4.20pm)
Star of The Wilson Dixon Line (BBC Radio 2) our favourite Outlaw Country music legend from Cripple Creek Colorado is back at the fringe after taking to the road to find the real America.
After breaking up with his wife Maureen (she took the kids and moved in next door with carpet salesman Dwayne Richards) Wilson retreated to the mountains, where amongst the wonders of nature and his reclusive geriatric Uncle Wilbur, Wilson emerged with a new Philosophy, a new agenda and the inspiration for a new album.
Wilson now hits the road to find the real America - ( not the one you see on sitcoms where everyone is witty and laughing all the time). Wilson travelled along the dusty pot-holed byways to the heart of the real America, stopping at places and meeting the people that lie at the heart of the “American Dream.”
Wilson Dixon's American Dream is not really about dreams at all - it's about real people and real events, people and places less at the ‘heart' more at the ‘down at heel' of the American Dream . It's about meeting a Vietnam Vet who thinks America won. It's about driving all night to sing to a field of cows. It's about going to a town called Nameless, Tennessee and having a philosophical debate with the inhabitants about the name, or lack of one. It's about missing your kid's birthday and getting rung up by your ex wife and abused in a language you don't understand. It's about not being around to stop your ex wife from taking night classes in Spanish.
Since his 2008 Fringe hit, Wilson Dixon Rides Again , the cowboy philosopher finished his UK tour fitting in a spot on BBC Radio 4's 4 Stands Up before leaving and setting off on a tour of Australia.
2009 has been a busy year so far. Nominated for a Chortle Award , Wilson has already recorded his own series for BBC Radio 2 (The Wilson Dixon Line) , made a return appearance on Australian TV's Spicks and Specks (ABC), played seasons at the Melbourne and New Zealand International festivals and is in development for his first TV series with UK comedy producer Babycow .
Wilson Dixon is a creation of New Zealand comic Jesse Griffin who was a founder member of The Four Noels. As a member of the 4 Noels, he has won best comedy awards at Melbourne and Wellington Fringe festivals and has been nominated twice for the prestigious Barry Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
