Damian Callinan, one of Australia’s most versatile, prolific and popular comedians makes his Edinburgh Festival debut with “mmm... they’re small!”; a funny, personal and poignant exposé of male infertility whilst celebrating a life without kids or large testicles.
Through a one-man multi-character performance we see Callinan enduring baffling school medical checks, ineffective downstairs surgery and the unhelpful prognosis that his “floompytoomps had a low pontflaccation and yargo factor in the mid gonad region”.
A bigger picture of male infertility emerges from Damian’s support group where a rabble of characters who, in the pursuit of fatherhood, are riding the roller coaster of IVF, investing in bizarre fertility rituals and chasing internet surrogacy.
But this is no sob story, it’s a show that explores how infertility shapes identity; Audiences are taken to the point of tears both of laughter and of compassion. The question remains – will he ever become a dad?
Damian Callinan is a multi award winning stand-up and character comedian; having twice been nominated for a Barry Award in Melbourne ICF and winning the best comedy award at the Melbourne Fringe as well as a host of other gongs. He is one of the stars of Australian TV sketch show Skithouse (also shown in NZ and UK) as well as a regular contributor on Channel 10’s comedy shows The Wedge and The Mansion, and for ABC Radio, he is the regular master of satirical guises. He has made numerous appearances on shows such as Rove Live, Good Morning Australia, Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala, Joker Poker, The Fat to name but a few and is soon to star in Fox Television’s new show Comedy Slapdown.
