PRESS RELEASE

NEWBURY COMEDY FESTIVAL
Saturday 7 – Saturday 14 July 2007

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Newbury Comedy Festival is proud to announce some of the highlights of this year’s festival. The official programme will be announced at The Corn Exchange, Newbury on 27th April at 7.45pm in a taster show featuring Barbara Nice and Rebus McTaggart. Tickets will be on sale immediately to Friends of The Corn Exchange and to General Public on 7th May 2007.

Newbury Comedy Festival continues to grow apace and goes from strength to strength in the calibre of the acts appearing and also the adventurous and innovative nature of the programming. Some of the highlights of the fourth festival are as follows: Continuing to bring the very best of home grown stars and big US talent, this year the festival can reveal that US comedy sensation SUSIE ESSMAN, star of TV’s Curb Your Enthusiasm will make her UK debut and appear exclusively at the festival for two nights only. These are her only appearances in the UK this year.

TV favourite PHILL JUPITUS is returning to his performing roots by appearing with brand new comedy improv troupe Big City Improv alongside Andre Vincent and Suki Webster. Brilliant Irish Stand up and TV star ED BYRNE makes his Newbury Comedy Festival Debut as does his compatriot, star of TV’s Father Ted, ARDAL O’HANLON. Radio and TV legend ARTHUR SMITH will be appearing and political comic and investigator MARK THOMAS will tell us about his foray into the arms trade with shocking but always compulsive results. Triple Perrier nominated Aussie favourite ADAM HILLS will also be making his festival debut.

There is also an excellent line up of the very best new talent at the festival, including last year’s If.Comeddie awards (formerly Perrier award) newcomer winner JOSIE LONG, and nominated for the main award PAUL SINHA along with RUSSELL KANE, PLESTED AND BROWN and perennial favourites LUCY PORTER, STEPHEN K AMOS, and SHAZIA MIRZA.

Comedy in a more theatrical setting is represented by European Comedy Award Winner PAOLO NANI with his hysterical mime THE LETTER, and festival favourites BLIND SUMMIT are back with their brilliant show THE SPACEMAN. The Drill Hall’s commissioned work SIGNS OF A DIVA explores the concept of signed song. For out and out cabaret how about KIT AND THE WIDOW or TAYLOR MAC?

And that’s not all; there are the spectacular CONEDANCERS in the market place, and the hugely successful WISECRACKERS competition for junior comics across the South of England. The aspiring comics are mentored and tutored by professional comics including NATALIE HAYNES, WIL HODGSON and MATT KIRSHEN and have got through legions of heats to be at the final in the Corn Exchange as part of the Festival. The grown-up version, new act competition YOU MUST BE JOKING returns for a fourth year. Finally, outspoken Aussie, BRENDON BURNS will be appearing for the BAD FILM CLUB. All this goes up to make a festival that should not be by-passed.
